The Member States of the European Union share a single market, a single external border and a single trade policy.

In order to cultivate the digital economy and achieve full potential of the Digital Single Market (DSM) the European Commission promotes the use of open ICT standards and also supports harmonisation of standards at global level, through formal International Standardization and global partnerships.

The EU supports an effective and coherent standardisation framework, which ensures that high quality standards are developed in a timely manner. The European Commission issues standardisation requests and financially supports the work of European Standardization Organizations: European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), European Committee for Standardization (CEN), European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) which operate alongside the standardization setting conducted by industry or National Standardisation Organizations.

The use of ICT standards and technical specifications developed by formal European and International standardization organizations, remain accessible for implementation by any player and allow for a fair and level playing field, thanks to transparent and inclusive governance and IPR policies.

A series of domains (and subdomains) have been identified as strategic to the Digital Single Market (such as 5G, Internet of Things, Cybersecurity, Cloud, data driven services and applications), and also extend to essential interoperability standards in areas such as eHealth, Intelligent Transport Systems, Smart Cities and Smart and Efficient Energy Use.

InDiCo aims to strengthen global collaboration for ICT standardization and will assist in international standardization projects holding activities in Europe, therefore enabling the European players, big or small, to have better opportunities to get involved in the work.
